In the face of recent developments, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has confirmed ongoing talks with Syria regarding the refugee situation.
IRC President, David Miliband, in a statement to “Al-Arabiya,” clarified that the Committee is in communication with Syrian partners about the return of refugees. He emphasized that solving the migrant crisis in Africa requires international funding.
150,000 Sudanese Flee
Miliband highlighted the reluctance of Western countries to fulfill their obligations towards migrants, noting that Africa is paying a hefty price due to the cancellation of the Grain Agreement and rising inflation.
Concerning the fighting in Sudan, which has entered its fourth month between the army and Rapid Support Forces, Miliband noted that 150,000 Sudanese have fled the violence to Chad, which is already suffering from dire conditions.
In terms of the humanitarian situation in Yemen, Miliband confirmed a significant improvement due to political decisions.
An Impasse Threatening Syrians
IRC President, David Miliband, warned last week that the impasse faced by the United Nations concerning the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with the last opposition-held pocket in Syria endangers 4.1 million Syrians there.
Miliband’s comments came more than two weeks after the failure of the UN Security Council to renew the mandate for the Bab al-Hawa border crossing between Syria and Turkey, which provides aid to Syrians in areas outside the control of the Syrian government.
After 100 Days of War in Sudan.. And Hundreds of Thousands of Refugees in 5 Countries
It is noteworthy that the majority of the population in Northwestern Syria lives in poverty and relies on aid for survival.
The crisis was exacerbated by the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit southern Turkey and northern Syria in February. The earthquake resulted in the deaths of more than 50,000 people, including over 6,000 in Syria, according to the United Nations. It also led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands.
