The Iraqi Ministry of Transportation announced today, Friday, that Iraqi Airways has launched its first flight to Tunisia.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Maitham Al-Safi, who was quoted by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), this inaugural flight marks the beginning of a scheduled air service from Baghdad to Tunisia.
This development is part of Iraq’s broader efforts to expand its international air service and enhance connectivity with other nations.
The new route to Tunisia is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and increase tourism and business exchanges between the two countries.
Iraqi Airways, the national carrier of Iraq, has been steadily rebuilding its international flight network following years of conflict that limited its operations.
The airline has focused on expanding its destinations across the Middle East and beyond as part of Iraq’s recovery and normalization of international relations.
Tunisia, known for its historic sites and Mediterranean coastline, presents a new destination that could attract Iraqi tourists and foster business links between the two regions.
This route will also facilitate easier travel for diaspora communities and bilateral diplomatic engagements.
Lufthansa, Germany’s flagship airline, recently extended its suspension of flights over Iranian and Iraqi airspace until August 13.
This decision comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, prompting heightened security measures.
In addition to avoiding the airspace of Iran and Iraq, Lufthansa has also decided to suspend flights to several key Middle Eastern destinations, including Tel Aviv, Tehran, Beirut, Amman, and the Iraqi city of Erbil until the same date.
The German aviation group cited its latest security analysis as the basis for this extended suspension.
