At the resumed emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly regarding the Palestinian issue and the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the Israeli occupation, Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid, the Acting Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, delivered Iraq’s statement. According to a press release from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, Dr. Obaid welcomed the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, issued at the request of the General Assembly, emphasizing the importance of following up on and implementing it as recommended by the court in its opinion.
Dr. Obaid noted that the advisory opinion was issued after careful study and realistic discussions aimed at charting a course to end over seven decades of illegal and inhumane Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and to halt the severe violations committed against the Palestinian people. He urged the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities and apply effective pressure on Israel to stop the massacres and genocide against Palestinians.
The statement also called for real and sustainable solutions to restore the rights of the Palestinian people, warning that the continuation of Israeli aggression and the international community’s disregard of these violations reflect the seriousness of this conflict on regional and international peace and security.
Dr. Obaid reaffirmed Iraq’s steadfast and principled position in supporting the just Palestinian cause in all international forums, stemming from its belief in the legitimacy of the cause and its commitment to Iraqi national constants. He confirmed Iraq’s support for the Palestinian people in achieving their aspirations and restoring their inalienable rights, including their right to self-determination and to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
