Iraq announced the reopening of its embassy in Libya, appointing Ahmed Al-Sahaf as the head of the Iraqi mission, as per a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

This move marks a significant step in re-establishing diplomatic ties between Iraq and Libya after a decade-long hiatus due to the political turmoil in Libya.

In the statement, Al-Sahaf expressed Iraq’s support for international efforts to restore security and stability in Libya and to adopt a political solution that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people.

He emphasized Iraq’s commitment to developing bilateral relations between Egypt and Libya and coordinating high-level visits between Baghdad and Tripoli in the future.

Al-Sahaf highlighted the importance of the Iraqi embassy’s role in revitalizing political and diplomatic activities and serving the interests of both brotherly countries. He also pointed out that the embassy would provide consular services and assistance to the Iraqi community residing in Libya.

The reopening of the Iraqi embassy comes after a 10-year closure triggered by the developments in Libya.

In March, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced Baghdad’s intention to reopen its embassy in Libya.

This announcement was made during a visit by a ministry delegation to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and published on the ministry’s official website.

This development represents a significant diplomatic gesture, indicating a strengthening of ties and increased cooperation between Iraq and Libya.

The reopening of the embassy is expected to facilitate better communication, cooperation in various sectors, and aid in addressing the needs of the Iraqi community in Libya.
