Iraq expresses readiness to play a mediating role in facilitating a solution to the ongoing war in Yemen, announced Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein during his meeting with his Yemeni counterpart in Baghdad on Sunday.
The conflict in Yemen, which has been ongoing since 2015 between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi rebels, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
However, the country has witnessed relative calm since reaching a United Nations-brokered ceasefire in 2022, which expired last October.
Hussein stated during a press conference with Yemeni Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, “There is an undeclared ceasefire or truce now… We hope this situation will turn into a dialogue between all Yemeni parties.” He further added, “Iraq is prepared to assist in this matter. We have good relations with all parties. We can leverage these relations to serve stability and security in Yemen, and we can act regionally in this regard.”
On his part, the Yemeni Minister stated in his speech, “Since October of last year, there has been an undeclared truce, but on our part as the legitimate government, we are committed to the terms of this truce.” He added, “We believe it is time to end this war in Yemen.”
