During the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin held talks with his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, on Friday.

Both sides have agreed to enhance their bilateral relations through high-level communication, as reported by the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The foreign ministers of South Korea and Iran discussed bolstering their bilateral ties and the recent transfer of frozen funds to Tehran in Seoul, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

Both ministers assessed that the recent transfer of frozen funds to Tehran in Seoul to a third country had been smooth, and they agreed to use this development as an opportunity to further develop their relations.

In the past month, the United States announced negotiations with Tehran to move the frozen funds from Korean banks to a special account in Qatar in exchange for the release of five American citizens currently detained in Iran.

Bilateral relations have remained strained due to the $6 billion of Iranian funds frozen under US sanctions, which were reinstated after former President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018.
