Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to resolve ongoing issues with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq during his official visit to the country.
On Thursday, the second day of his trip, President Pezeshkian met with Kurdish leaders in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, aiming to strengthen ties and address key concerns.
Kurdistan Regional President Nechirvan Barzani described the relationship between Kurdistan and Iran as “historic” and reaffirmed his commitment that Kurdistan’s territory would not be used to threaten Iran’s security.
He acknowledged existing problems with Iran and expressed his determination to resolve them. In turn, President Pezeshkian assured that his visit was aimed at finding solutions to these issues.
Pezeshkian also held a meeting with Kurdistan’s Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, where they discussed various technical matters, including border control, trade, and security.
Additionally, the Iranian President met with Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and extended an invitation for him to visit Iran.
The Iranian president is scheduled to travel to Basra today, marking the first visit by an Iranian president to the southern Iraqi city in nearly a century, according to Iranian Consul Ali Abedi.
Iran and the Kurdistan Region share a long-standing relationship shaped by geographic proximity and mutual economic interests.
However, tensions have occasionally surfaced over border security and other strategic concerns. Both sides have expressed a willingness to work through these challenges, highlighting the importance of cooperation for regional stability.
