Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused the United States on Saturday of assisting Israel in the assassination of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas’s political bureau. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed continued support for the “resistance” movement.
Khamenei emphasized that Sinwar’s death would not halt the progress of the “Axis of Resistance.” He added, “Hamas is alive and will remain alive,” acknowledging that while the loss of Sinwar is painful, the resistance movement continues to advance. Sinwar was killed in a gunfight with Israeli forces after a year-long pursuit, with his death officially announced on Thursday.
Israel has accused Sinwar of being the mastermind behind Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which led to the onset of the war in Gaza. Khamenei described Sinwar as “a prominent symbol of resistance and struggle,” praising his resilience and strategic blow against Israel during the October 7 attack, calling it “an unforgettable moment in the region’s history.”
Khamenei reiterated Iran’s commitment to supporting the resistance, stating, “We will remain by the side of the resistance with sincerity, just as before.”
The accusations come after Sinwar’s appointment as head of Hamas’s political bureau in August, following the assassination of his predecessor Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July, in an attack attributed to Israel. Khamenei had shared a rare video on his website of a 2011 meeting with Sinwar, who at the time was part of a Palestinian delegation led by Haniyeh visiting Tehran.
