The Iranian Ministry of Security announced on Friday the arrest of 14 ISIS terrorists across four provinces, as part of a coordinated counter-terrorism effort.
According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the security operations took place in Tehran, Alborz, Fars, and Khuzestan provinces.
The ministry stated that these individuals were identified as part of the ISIS Khorasan group, which it claims is backed by “American-Zionist” entities, and were apprehended by judicial order.
The statement further detailed that the accused had entered Iran illegally in recent days with the intent to carry out terrorist attacks.
Seven of the ISIS members were captured in Fars province, while the remaining seven were apprehended in Tehran, Alborz, and Khuzestan.
The results of the investigations and interrogations will be disclosed at a later date.
ISIS has previously claimed responsibility for several attacks in Iran, including major incidents such as the 2017 twin bombings targeting the Iranian Parliament and the mausoleum of Iran’s founder Ruhollah Khomeini.
The group also claimed a 2018 attack on a military parade in southwest Iran and an attack on visitors at the tomb of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force, in January 2024.
The Iranian military has denied the claims made by the “Fars” news agency regarding the causes of the helicopter crash that killed former President Ebrahim Raisi.
The Iranian General Staff’s Public Relations Office stated on Wednesday that the report by “Fars,” which attributed the crash to the helicopter carrying two extra passengers against safety protocols, thus lacking the power to reach the required altitude, is false, according to the Russian news agency “TASS”.
A security source familiar with the investigation’s conclusions stated that the Iranian security forces are absolutely certain that the incident was an accident.
