On Wednesday, Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development announced plans to resume cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza.
The decision comes after an investigation led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna into allegations that some UNRWA staff members were involved in an attack carried out by Hamas in October.
Germany had previously suspended its collaboration with the agency pending the results of the investigation. The findings have now cleared the way for the resumption of support, highlighting the importance of UNRWA’s role in providing crucial aid to Palestinian refugees in Gaza.
The move is part of Germany’s broader commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at providing humanitarian aid and promoting stability in conflict-affected regions.
The German government has emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in all UN operations to ensure that aid reaches those in dire need without misuse.
This decision marks a significant step in Germany’s foreign policy, reinforcing its role as a key player in international development and humanitarian assistance.
On Tuesday, UNRWA reported that over one million people have lost their homes, while 75% of the population has been displaced.
The agency emphasized that the cleanup and debris removal efforts from ongoing Israeli bombardments will take years to complete.
UNRWA highlighted that a ceasefire remains the only remaining hope for preventing further devastation and poverty among the residents of Gaza.
Days ago, the UNRWA Commissioner-General has warned of the worsening conditions in the West Bank, including refugee camps.
He stated on the X platform that the recent operation carried out by Israeli forces in Nur Shams camp “caused loss of life and significant damage to homes and public services.”
He continued, saying that hundreds, including at least 112 Palestinian children, have been killed in the West Bank since the outbreak of the Gaza war on October 7.
