The United States has approved a significant arms deal with Germany, agreeing to sell up to 600 Patriot air defense missiles for nearly $5 billion, according to the US State Department.
The approval was granted on Thursday, August 15, 2024.
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) issued a statement confirming that the proposed sale will significantly enhance Germany’s ability to address both current and future threats, bolstering the defensive capabilities of its military.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally that plays a crucial role in political and economic stability in Europe,” the DSCA stated.
The agency added that the deal will also support Germany’s objectives of enhancing national and regional defense while ensuring compatibility with U.S. and NATO forces.
In addition to the missiles, the sale includes related equipment such as training materials, spare parts, and logistical support.
The DSCA has already submitted the necessary certification to Congress, notifying them of the potential sale.
This deal follows Germany’s previous contribution of three Patriot systems and associated missiles to Ukraine in response to Russia’s extensive invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.
The Patriot missile system is designed for air defense against hostile aircraft, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. These defensive missiles are capable of striking targets up to 100 kilometers away and at altitudes of up to 30 kilometers.
