Germany’s State Minister, Katja Keul, recently emphasized the close geographical and diplomatic ties between Tunisia and the European Union. Pointing out the short distance between Tunisia and Sicily – comparable to the distance between Berlin and Hamburg – she affirmed Germany’s unwavering support for Tunisia, especially since the pivotal 2011 revolution.
“Germany has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Tunisians in their pursuit of democracy, rule of law, and human rights,” Keul stated. Reflecting on the rapid response from Germany when Tunisia faced surging food prices last year, due to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, she remarked, “We acted swiftly and without bureaucratic delays.”
However, Keul voiced concerns over the escalating suppression in Tunisia. “Since February, there’s been an alarming rise in the arrest of opposition members, journalists, and civil society activists,” she noted. Emphasizing the significance of safeguarding freedom of expression, the State Minister added, “Critical voices in Tunisia must not be silenced. I particularly look forward to discussions with representatives of Tunisian civil society during my visit.”
Keul further expressed distress over the heart-wrenching reports on the conditions of refugees and migrants in Tunisia. “For the German government, bilateral and European cooperation with Tunisia in the migration sector unequivocally hinges on upholding humanitarian standards and the human rights of refugees and migrants,” she said. During her visit, Keul intends to gain a deeper understanding by engaging in personal dialogues with refugees and migrants. She emphasized, “Amid all political debates, we must never lose sight of the individuals at the heart of these issues.”
