The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), through its Secretary-General Jasim Al-Badiwi, expressed its support this Saturday for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2724, which calls for a cessation of hostilities in Sudan throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement, Al-Badiwi expressed hope that all parties in the Republic of Sudan would adhere to the UN’s decision to ensure the safety and security of the Sudanese people and to honor the sanctity of Ramadan.
Al-Badiwi reiterated the GCC’s firm stance on the importance of maintaining Sudan’s sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity, and its support for Sudan amidst the evolving and consequential crisis.
He emphasized the need for de-escalation, fostering dialogue, unity, alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people, preserving the cohesion of national state institutions, preventing their collapse, and avoiding any foreign interventions that could exacerbate conflict and threaten regional peace and security.
The UN Security Council adopted a British-drafted resolution calling for an immediate end to hostilities in Sudan during the holy month of Ramadan, urging all conflict parties to engage in sustainable resolution through dialogue.
The resolution, supported by 14 members with Russia abstaining, also calls for the removal of obstacles to ensure full, rapid, and unhindered access to humanitarian aid and compliance with international humanitarian law obligations.
These obligations include the protection of civilians, civil properties, and adherence to the Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians in Sudan.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives through death and injury, will mark its one-year anniversary in the middle of next month.
