The foreign ministers of the G7 group have called on all parties involved in the current Middle East crisis to refrain from any actions that may escalate the conflict.
In a statement, the Italian presidency of the G7 said, “We call on the concerned parties to refrain from any move that could hinder the path of dialogue or encourage further escalation.”
After discussing recent developments in a video conference, the ministers expressed “deep concern about the recent events that threaten to turn the current situation into a regional crisis, starting from Lebanon,” according to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
The extraordinary meeting of the G7 was convened after the escalation of the recent crisis.
Tensions have escalated following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, in Tehran, Iran, and prominent Hezbollah military leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut, Lebanon.
Hamas and Iran announced on Wednesday morning that Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting his residence in Tehran, following his participation in the inauguration of the new Iranian president, Masoud Bezhkiyan. Hamas held Israel and the United States responsible for Haniyeh’s death, stating that “the attack will not go unanswered.”
