The office of France’s President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne has resigned from her position.

Borne’s resignation comes in the wake of recent political tensions surrounding controversial immigration legislation supported by Macron’s government, aimed at strengthening the government’s ability to deport certain foreigners, among other measures.

Élisabeth Borne assumed the role of Prime Minister in May 2022 following Macron’s re-election for a second term, becoming the second female Prime Minister in France’s history.

In a statement released by Macron’s office, it was mentioned that Borne would continue to handle the day-to-day domestic issues of the government until a new Prime Minister is appointed.

This development comes at a time when President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to inject fresh momentum into his second term ahead of the European Parliament elections and the Summer Olympics in Paris.

Macron had sparked speculation of a government reshuffle in December, promising a new political initiative after a tumultuous 2023 marked by controversial pension reforms and immigration laws.

The resignation of Borne signals significant political development in France and raises questions about the future direction of Macron’s government as it navigates a complex landscape of domestic and international challenges.
