Media reports have brought to light stunning developments about the “European Super League,” a controversial football project spearheaded by several of Europe’s top clubs.
According to Spain’s As newspaper, the ambitious league is scheduled to kick off in September 2025.
Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, the organization behind the European Super League, provided more details in an interview with Germany’s Kicker magazine.
He stated that preparations are underway to launch this new competition.
Reichart, who previously headed RTL before joining the project initiated by Real Madrid, highlighted the primary goals of reducing broadcasting costs and delivering an enhanced product.
The German executive emphasized the exploration of new technologies and business models to offer football fans a better and more cost-effective viewing experience.
Reichart critiqued the current UEFA Champions League format, pointing out its failure to meet expectations with recent unbalanced results, such as Bayern Munich’s 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb and Borussia Dortmund’s 7-1 victory against Celtic.
Reichart advocates for a traditional league system with home and away matches followed by a playoff, arguing that matches are more appealing when stakes are high and teams compete on an equal footing.
According to reliable sources cited by the newspaper, the likely launch date for this much-anticipated league is set for September 2025.
