The European Union’s High Representative for Security and Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, announced the commencement of transferring proceeds from frozen Russian assets within the EU to fund military aid to Ukraine, amounting to 1.4 billion euros.
Borrell made this statement ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers, which was attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. He said, “We have begun using the proceeds from frozen Russian assets and have transferred 1.4 billion euros to Ukraine and EU countries to finance military supplies.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West against seizing or profiting from the frozen Russian assets, emphasizing that any attempt to do so would be considered outright theft and would not go unpunished. The West has frozen around 300 billion euros of Russian funds, with 200 billion of that amount held within the European Union.
Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov stated that Russia has sufficient revenues and Western assets that can be seized and frozen, and that Russia will respond with appropriate measures.
