Josep Borrell, the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Chief, stated today, Saturday, that European nations aim to enter peace negotiations concerning Ukraine. At the same time, he pointed out the EU’s continued support for Kyiv with arms. Borrell mentioned in an interview with the newspaper “Pais”, “I don’t believe that abandoning military aid to Ukraine will lead to peace.” He continued, “Europe is doing its utmost to initiate peace negotiations that recognize the existence of an aggressor and a victim.”
He noted that “if not for the conflict in Ukraine, Kyiv’s accession to the European Union would have taken many years.” Borrell clarified that “the Russo-Ukrainian crisis made Kyiv lean closer to the European Union, contrary to what Russia desires.”
These remarks come in tandem with the US military’s assessments of the failure of the Ukrainian “counterattack”. Meanwhile, Moscow perceives Western calls for talks on this matter as a tactical deception, aimed at buying time, granting the exhausted Ukrainian forces a respite, and an opportunity to regroup and replenish their arms and ammunition.
