The European Council announced today (Monday) that it has decided to extend the mandate of the European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq for one year, ending by the close of April 2026.

According to the Arab World News Agency, the European Council stated in a press release that it allocated 66 million euros as a budget for the mission to operate from May 1st until June 30th, 2026, instead of June 2025.

The Council clarified in its statement that the strategic objectives of the mission have been adjusted to contribute to the development and strengthening of civilian aspects in the security sector in Iraq.

The European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) was established in October 2017 to provide strategic advice and support to the Iraqi government in the reform of its civilian security sector.

The mission aims to enhance Iraq’s capabilities in areas such as policing, law enforcement, and criminal justice, with a focus on promoting human rights, good governance, and the rule of law.

The decision to extend the mission’s mandate underscores the EU’s ongoing commitment to supporting Iraq’s security sector reform efforts and fostering stability and prosperity in the country.
