In a thrilling match, England secured their place in the Women’s World Cup championship game with a 3-1 victory over co-hosts Australia on Wednesday, bringing an end to the Matildas’ impressive journey in the tournament.
Australian soccer star Sam Kerr, making her first appearance in the tournament, managed to find the net for the Matildas, but their efforts were outmatched by the prowess of the European champions, England.
The Lionesses took the lead in the 36th minute, courtesy of a goal by Ella Toone, asserting their dominance in the first half with solid possession.
Although Kerr’s equalizer in the 63rd minute provided a glimmer of hope for the 75,000-strong crowd, England secured their win with goals from Lauren Hemp in the 71st minute and Alessia Russo just four minutes before the end of regular time.
The upcoming Women’s World Cup final between England and Spain is set to be a historic event, as both teams will be making their first appearance in the championship match. The highly anticipated match will take place at Stadium Australia on Sunday, marking the first all-European final since 2003.
