Elon Musk has revealed that X, previously known as Twitter, is set to enhance its live audio conversation tool, Spaces, by integrating video capabilities.
Musk anticipates launching this update by the end of this year, or at the latest, early next year.
Musk explained that this addition would be straightforward, allowing users to choose whether to enable or disable video during conversations.
He highlighted that in multi-speaker sessions, the video would automatically switch to the person speaking, akin to the functionality seen in platforms like Google Meet.
Musk believes that video integration will enrich communication in Spaces, as it enables users to observe speakers’ facial expressions and body language, providing more context to the conversation.
This move is seen as X’s strategy to increase user engagement on its platform, encouraging them to stay within the social network rather than using external services for video interaction.
Over the summer, X introduced a feature for broadcasting live video, resembling services offered by platforms like Facebook Live and Instagram Live.
Spaces, launched in 2021, was initially viewed as a rival to Clubhouse, which rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since Musk acquired the platform, the most notable change to Spaces has been its rebranding from Twitter Spaces to X Spaces.
Now, Musk and X are poised to evolve Spaces from being solely audio-focused to incorporating video, marking a significant enhancement of the feature.
