Egyptian peacekeepers from the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) have begun their withdrawal from the city of Gao in northern Mali.

The move is part of the complete withdrawal of the mission from Mali, scheduled to be completed by 31 December, 2023, as stated in an announcement released by MINUSMA.

The Egyptian combat and convoy escort battalion has played a crucial role in conducting convoy escorts from Gao to Tessalit, passing through Kidal and Aguelhok, despite facing challenging conditions marked by the increased use of improvised explosive devices by armed terrorist groups.

Throughout their mission, the Egyptian troops have been instrumental in securing logistical convoys and providing protection to civilians.

They have also actively engaged in civil-military activities, offering essential supplies such as food, school materials, and free medical consultations to the most vulnerable populations.

In the coming days, peacekeepers from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Bangladesh will also depart from Mali, and their respective camps in Ogossagou, Goundam, Ber, and Ménaka will be closed, according to the MINUSMA statement.

Established in April 2013, MINUSMA aims to support Mali’s transitional authorities in stabilizing the country amid challenging security conditions. With the gradual withdrawal of various peacekeeping units, the mission is entering a critical phase in its efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
