The Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Army, General Osama Askar, has affirmed the Egyptian Armed Forces’ full readiness to establish a continuous aerial bridge to support Libya. This commitment includes providing all possible assistance and leveraging resources to back the search and rescue teams, according to a statement from the General Command forces.

Today, General Khalifa Haftar, the Commander-in-Chief of the “General Command” forces, received General Askar and his accompanying delegation in the city of Benghazi. As per the statement, General Askar conveyed his condolences on behalf of himself, the Egyptian people, and its leadership to the victims of the floods and torrents that affected the city of Derna and other eastern Libyan cities.

Three Days of Mourning in Egypt

Earlier on Tuesday, the Egyptian Presidency announced a three-day mourning period in solidarity with the victims of the humanitarian disaster caused by the storm in Libya and the earthquake in Morocco. According to a presidential statement, during a meeting with several military leaders, President Sisi directed immediate support and humanitarian relief, both by air and sea, to the brethren in Libya and Morocco.

The Egyptian President also instructed the Egyptian Army to provide all forms of humanitarian assistance, including relief teams, rescue equipment, and shelter camps for the affected, in collaboration and coordination with Libyan and Moroccan agencies and institutions. He emphasized Egypt’s full solidarity and support for its brethren in both Morocco and Libya.

The Libyan Storm

At least 2,000 individuals lost their lives due to floods resulting from heavy rainfall that lashed eastern Libya in recent days. This disaster was attributed to Storm “Daniel” that swept across the Mediterranean, with heavy rainfall previously affecting Turkey, Bulgaria, and Greece.
