Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, warned on Sunday against the international community’s negligence of the prolonged crisis in Sudan, due to its duration or the emergence of other crises in the region. Shoukry emphasized the need for regional and international efforts to entice the conflicting parties towards proactive engagement in resolving the issue.
This call was made during Minister Shoukry’s reception of the European Union’s envoy to the Horn of Africa, Annet Weber, to discuss the security and political challenges in the Horn of Africa region and the situation in Sudan, as mentioned by the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The spokesperson highlighted in a press statement that Shoukry appreciated the European support for Egypt’s efforts in creating a common ground that enables Sudanese civilian forces to address the root causes of the crisis and initiate a comprehensive political process. Shoukry also reviewed the efforts of neighboring countries since Egypt hosted the neighboring countries summit in Cairo.
In this context, Shoukry emphasized the utter importance of full respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, preserving the Sudanese state, its capabilities, institutions, and the need to seriously and comprehensively address the humanitarian aftermath of the current crisis. Furthermore, he called upon donor countries and entities to honor their commitments made during the donor conference last June.
The meeting also tackled the situation in Somalia, where Minister Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for Somalia’s efforts against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab and for restoring stability and completing the political pathway.
Additionally, discussions included the recent rounds of negotiations concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), with Egypt emphasizing the importance of reaching a legally binding agreement on the dam’s filling and operation.
According to the spokesperson, the EU envoy lauded “Egypt’s pivotal role in the region”, stressing the EU’s commitment to continuous coordination with Egypt on all relevant regional issues.
