Ismail Haniyeh, the Head of the Political Bureau of Hamas, arrived in Cairo on Tuesday leading a delegation from the movement’s leadership.
The visit aims to discuss political and field conditions amidst the aggressive war on Gaza, efforts to halt the aggression, provide relief to citizens, and achieve the Palestinian people’s goals, according to a press statement issued by the movement on Tuesday.
In the same context, the Egyptian Foreign Minister recently emphasized to a U.S. delegation the urgent need for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza. He reiterated Egypt’s stance against any attempts or actions that would force Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip, stressing the importance of allowing sufficient humanitarian aid to meet the needs of the Palestinians in the region.
The U.S. Senate members acknowledged Egypt’s efforts in addressing the political and humanitarian fallout of the crisis and expressed their efforts within the U.S. Congress to mitigate the escalating crisis and its severe humanitarian implications.
They also thanked the Egyptian government for its significant contributions to delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, including medical and relief supplies.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister condemned recent statements by Israeli ministers advocating for the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza, labeling such actions as war crimes in violation of international law and humanitarian law.
He called on the international community to halt these Israeli plans for displacement, which have been a longstanding and systematic policy even before the establishment of the state of Israel, and have intensified under the current extreme government in Israel.
The Council urged Washington to adopt courageous positions to align its actions with its rhetoric and condemned the U.S. administration’s complete compliance with the status quo, supporting an Israeli government that promotes “Greater Israel” on all occupied territories.
Furthermore, in a meeting that included discussions with Russia, the Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed appreciation from Arab and Islamic countries for Russia’s support of the Palestinian cause and expected further efforts from Russia, leveraging its permanent membership in the UN Security Council, to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
He questioned the rationale behind the continuous bombardment targeting displaced civilians in the south, aimed at forcing the inhabitants to leave the sector, and announced Egypt’s initiative to draft a new resolution to address the imbalance in humanitarian aid access to Gaza, to be presented to the UN Security Council on behalf of the Arab and Islamic groups.
