The 16-member crew of the Comoros-flagged oil tanker “Prestige Falcon,” which capsised off Oman, are still missing, according to the country’s maritime security centre on Tuesday. The crew includes 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, as reported on social media platform X.
The Omani centre informed Reuters that the vessel remains “submerged, inverted,” but did not confirm whether it had stabilised or if there were any oil leaks.
Shipping data from LSEG indicated that the tanker, built in 2007 and measuring 117 meters in length, was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsised near Oman’s industrial port of Duqm. Such tankers are typically used for short coastal voyages.
Omani authorities launched a search-and-rescue operation in coordination with maritime authorities, as reported by the state news agency late Monday. The port of Duqm, located on Oman’s southwest coast, is near major oil and gas projects, including a significant oil refinery that is part of Duqm’s extensive industrial zone, the sultanate’s largest economic project.
