The Republic of Congo will host a meeting of the African Union (AU) High-Level Committee on Libya on Monday, February 6, 2024.

The meeting will be a prelude to the arrangements for the National Reconciliation Conference to be held in Sirte two months later.

The Algerian government announced on Sunday that it will participate in the meeting with the participation of Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane, who will represent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The Tunisian Foreign Ministry also announced that Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar will head the Tunisian delegation participating in the meeting of the AU High-Level Committee on Libya.

The meeting will be attended by the leaders of the neighboring countries of Libya, or their representatives, and delegations from a number of member states of the AU Committee on Libya, namely Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Niger, Sudan, Mauritania, South Africa, Congo, Ethiopia and Uganda.

The meeting comes after the President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, received a message from the Congolese President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, during his reception of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Francophonie, Jean-Claude Gakosso.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in the National Reconciliation Project and the steps taken in preparation for the convening of the National Comprehensive Reconciliation Conference, as well as the proposals that guarantee the success of this major national event.

The Congolese minister also conveyed a similar message to the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, which was received on his behalf by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Taher Al-Baour.

The meeting discussed “a number of issues related to the prominent and serious role of the African Union in resolving the Libyan crisis, especially the file of national reconciliation and the role played by Congo through President Denis Sassou Nguesso, who is entrusted by the AU Commission with the file of the Libyan crisis.”

A National Reconciliation Conference is scheduled to be held in the city of Sirte in April next month, under the joint sponsorship of the AU High-Level Committee on Libya and the Presidential Council.
