The Colombian Foreign Ministry announced that it has officially informed the Israeli ambassador in Bogota of its decision to sever diplomatic relations between Colombia and Israel.

In a statement on its official “X” social media account on Friday, the Colombian Foreign Ministry stated, “Yesterday, the oral memorandum regarding the government’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with the state of Israel was officially presented to the Israeli ambassador to Colombia.”

The ministry added that the Israeli ambassador was informed that the Protocol Office at the Colombian Foreign Ministry would coordinate the procedures for the departure of Israeli diplomats, although the work of the consulates in Tel Aviv and Bogota would continue.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro had previously announced his decision to sever diplomatic ties with Israel due to the ongoing Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid accused President Petro of “anti-Semitism,” noting that relations between Israel and Colombia would remain friendly despite President Petro’s decision.
