China has officially assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of November, succeeding Brazil in this vital role. Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the situation in Gaza as a top priority on the Security Council’s agenda for the month. He emphasized the urgent need to cease hostilities, prevent further civilian casualties, and avert a greater humanitarian catastrophe. The goal is to stop the extension of the conflict and ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.
During its presidency, China aims to amplify the international community’s calls for peace and strengthen coordination with relevant parties, particularly Arab countries. The focus will be on supporting justice, building consensus, and mobilizing responsible and timely actions in the Security Council to de-escalate the conflict, protect civilians, alleviate humanitarian conditions, restore the peace process, and bring the Palestinian issue back onto the path of a two-state solution.
In addition to addressing the crisis in Gaza, Wang Wenbin stated that China, under its presidency, will also review other regional hotspots, including Syria, Yemen, the Central African Republic, and Somalia. He mentioned that China has proposed an open discussion in the Security Council on promoting sustainable peace through joint development.
Wang Wenbin reiterated China’s commitment to global peace, development, and the defense of the international order, grounded in the United Nations, international law, and the fundamental principles governing international relations. He stressed that the United Nations Security Council bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. China seeks to find ways to make the Council action-oriented, enhance solidarity and cooperation, and improve its authority and efficiency in fulfilling its duties as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
The Gaza Strip has been under intense Israeli bombardment since October 7, following the declaration of “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” by Muhammad Deif, the General Commander of the “Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades,” the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement. He stated that the operation aims to put an end to “Israeli violations.” Hamas managed to capture a number of Israelis, including soldiers and officers, and bring them back to the Gaza Strip. In response, the Israeli military initiated “Operation Iron Swords” and launched severe airstrikes on Gaza, in addition to engaging in clashes with Hamas fighters inside the settlements.
