China’s Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng has urged the two superpowers to cooperate in enhancing their relationship despite facing “grave challenges” on various issues.
Speaking at a forum at Harvard University, Xie expressed Beijing’s hope for cooperation with Washington to make progress in their relationship on a steady, sound, and sustainable path.
However, he emphasized that both sides must build this upon a correct understanding.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to begin a visit to China on Wednesday for extensive discussions covering the Middle East, the Ukrainian crisis, the situation in the South China Sea, and the Taiwan issue.
At the forum, the Chinese ambassador stated that his country does not bet on the failure of the United States, nor does it interfere in its internal affairs or elections. He expressed China’s readiness to be a partner and friend to the US.
However, he raised concerns about US interference in China’s internal affairs, particularly regarding issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Tibet, and the South China Sea.
He questioned how the essence of the bilateral relationship could be maintained despite these challenges.
The relationship between China and the US has been characterized by competition and cooperation, with issues such as trade, technology, human rights, and territorial disputes being significant points of contention.
Both countries are major global powers, and their relationship impacts geopolitics, trade, and security worldwide. Efforts to maintain stable relations between the two nations are critical for global stability and economic prosperity.
