In a significant political announcement, European Council President Charles Michel revealed his intentions to contest the upcoming European Parliament elections in June. If elected, Michel plans to vacate his current role by mid-July.

The declaration, reported by the U.S. channel “Alhurra,” came as a notable development in European political circles.

“I have decided to run in the 2024 European elections,” Michel stated. He further added that, upon his election, he would occupy his seat in the Parliament, prompting the European Council to nominate and appoint a successor by the end of June or early July.

Charles Michel, 48, has been a prominent figure in European politics, serving as the Prime Minister of Belgium before assuming the presidency of the European Council in late 2019.

His decision to participate in the parliamentary elections marks a pivotal shift in his political career, potentially influencing the future dynamics of European Union governance.

Michel’s candidacy is expected to bring his experience and vision for Europe to the forefront of the parliamentary debates, potentially impacting the EU’s future policy directions.

His tenure as the European Council President has been marked by significant developments, including navigating the complexities of Brexit and the EU’s response to global challenges.

As the European Parliament elections approach, Michel’s campaign and potential election are poised to be closely watched, reflecting the evolving political landscape within the European Union.

The announcement adds an intriguing dimension to the elections, with potential implications for the EU’s strategic direction in the coming years.
