After revealing details about a proposed agreement between Hamas and Israel regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and a prisoner exchange, Cairo will host consultations this week on the unresolved issues in the agreement.
A senior official disclosed on Saturday that the country would host Israeli and American delegations to discuss the “pending issues” in the potential Gaza ceasefire agreement, according to Egyptian media reports.
The official added that Egypt is holding talks with Hamas to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of prisoners held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
In a related development, Al Arabiya/Al Hadath reported that Israel would send delegations to Doha and Cairo on Monday to discuss the obstacles to the exchange deal.
Compromise Efforts
Earlier on Saturday, the White House announced that it, along with the CIA, is trying to reach a compromise to bridge the gap between Israel and Hamas on this issue, according to a report by Axios.
American officials revealed on Friday that a U.S. team was in Doha participating in the talks, expressing optimism that the latest disagreement with Hamas leaders could lead to an agreement for the release of prisoners held in Gaza and establish “sustainable calm” in the region.
Hamas Accepted an American Proposal
A senior Hamas source told Reuters on Saturday that the movement had accepted an American proposal to start talks on the release of Israeli prisoners.
The source, who requested anonymity due to the confidentiality of the talks, added that the movement had abandoned its demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before signing the agreement and would allow this to be achieved through negotiations during the initial six-week phase.
Efforts to reach a ceasefire and release prisoners in Gaza have intensified over the past few days through vigorous diplomatic efforts between Washington, Israel, and Qatar, which is leading the mediation efforts from Doha, hoping to end the nine-month-long war tragedy.
