The Sudanese Sovereignty Council declared on Saturday that there is no necessity for an Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) summit to discuss Sudan before implementing the outcomes of the previous summit.

In response to an invitation from IGAD to attend a summit in Uganda on 18 January to address issues in Sudan and the Somali problem, the Council stated that it has responded positively to all initiatives, particularly IGAD’s efforts for peace in Sudan.

However, the Council expressed dissatisfaction with IGAD’s failure to commit to implementing the outcomes of the recent summit in Djibouti.

The Council emphasized that IGAD did not arrange a meeting between the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the Commander of Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Council asserted, “We affirm that what is transpiring in Sudan is an internal matter… and that our response to regional initiatives does not imply relinquishing our sovereign right to resolve the Sudanese problem internally.” The statement underscores the Council’s commitment to handling Sudanese affairs autonomously while expressing openness to regional collaboration for the promotion of peace in the region.
