Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, reaffirmed on Friday that the upcoming BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg from 22 to 24 August, aims to deepen the cooperation in trade, finance, and security.

Wang mentioned during a press briefing, “The focus of the meeting will be on amplifying the partnership between BRICS nations and Africa, fostering mutual growth, achieving sustainable development, and strengthening inclusivity and multilateralism.”

He further added that participants would discuss important international issues, strategies to enhance coordination and collaboration in global affairs, and means to instill stability and propagate positive energy worldwide.

Hua Chunying, another spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, previously announced that President Xi Jinping would pay an official visit to South Africa between 21 and 24 August. She confirmed his attendance at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg. While the summit will host leaders from China, India, Brazil, and South Africa, Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the meeting through video technology.

At least 19 countries, including Argentina, Iran, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, have expressed a keen interest in joining this influential economic alliance.
