Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, issued a warning during his visit to Washington on Thursday, stating that the next few months will be “decisive” in determining the course of the war in Ukraine. He urged Western allies of Kiev to increase their assistance.
“The coming months will be decisive,” Borrell stated, adding that “many observers expect a Russian attack this summer, and Ukraine cannot wait for the outcome of the next US elections,” according to Agence France-Presse.
The European official, who visited the US capital after participating in a session of the United Nations Security Council in New York, emphasized that “everything that needs to be done must be done quickly.”
In Washington, Borrell met particularly with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, emphasizing the catastrophic consequences if Russia prevails in its war against Ukraine.
He added that if Russian President Vladimir Putin “prevails in this war, occupies Ukraine, and establishes a puppet regime in Kiev, similar to the regime already seen in Belarus, it will not stop there.”
“This will have enormous consequences for the United States and for the alliance systems built around the United States and Europe,” he continued.
According to a senior European official, Borrell also met with Republican Representative Don Biecon.
According to the same source, Borrell asked Biecon to “imagine Russian tanks in Kiev” and to convey his message to a seminar to be held by Republican lawmakers in West Virginia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to warn that his country urgently needs ongoing Western support to defeat Russia.
