Bayern Munich, the reigning champion of Germany’s top football league, announced on Sunday that it has signed French defender Sacha Boey from Turkish club Galatasaray on a contract that will run until 2028. Boey, 23, had joined Galatasaray on a four-year contract from French club Stade Rennais in 2021. Although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed, German media estimate the transfer value at around 30 million euros ($32.589 million).
Bayern Munich has been facing a series of challenges with a long list of injuries and absences, including key defenders Dayot Upamecano and Konrad Laimer, who were both injured in last week’s victory over Union Berlin and are expected to be sidelined for several weeks. In the same match, defensive midfielder Joshua Kimmich also sustained an injury. Additionally, defenders Kim Min-jae and Nassir Mazraoui are unavailable due to international duty, while defender Bouna Sarr is also out with an injury.
Boey’s football journey began at Rennes’ academy at the age of 14, where he made his first senior appearance in a Ligue 1 match against Toulouse in May 2019. His development took a significant turn during a loan spell at Dijon in the 2020/21 season, where he became a regular in the team, making 24 league appearances.
His performances caught the attention of Galatasaray, leading to a permanent move in the summer of 2021. Over two and a half years with the Turkish giants, Boey became a first-choice right-back, contributing to the team’s success with four goals and four assists across 83 first-team games, and playing a pivotal role in Galatasaray’s league title win in the 2022/23 season. Boey’s style of play is characterized by his speed, physical strength, and a willingness to engage in tackles. He is known for his attacking prowess, often joining in attacks and delivering crosses into the box, drawing comparisons to Achraf Hakimi for his forward play.
