AS Roma announced the departure of coach José Mourinho, effective immediately. This announcement followed a 3-1 defeat at AC Milan, leaving Roma in the ninth position in Serie A and jeopardizing their chance to qualify for the Champions League for the sixth consecutive year.

Additionally, Roma’s recent elimination in the Italian Cup by Lazio added to the team’s challenges.

Mourinho, in the third year of his tenure at Roma and approaching the end of his contract in June, had previously guided the team to victory in the UEFA Conference League in his first season. Last season, Roma reached the Europa League final under his leadership.

However, Mourinho’s tenure was not without controversy. His confrontations and criticisms of referees led to several suspensions, including a four-game UEFA suspension for verbally abusing a referee after Roma’s Europa League final loss to Sevilla, and a recent suspension for protests during the Milan game. These incidents were reportedly frowned upon by Roma’s American owners.

In a statement, the club confirmed Mourinho’s immediate exit along with his coaching staff. Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin expressed their gratitude to Mourinho for his dedication and passion since joining Roma.

They acknowledged his significant contributions but stated that a swift change was necessary for the club’s best interests.

Roma also indicated that updates regarding the new coaching staff would be announced shortly.

Mourinho, known for his illustrious career, has won multiple European titles with different clubs, including the 2003 UEFA Cup and 2004 Champions League with Porto, the 2010 Champions League with Inter Milan, and the 2017 Europa League with Manchester United. He has also led Chelsea and Real Madrid to several domestic titles.
