Clashes broke out in the Libyan capital Tripoli late on Monday and flights to the city’s main airport were suspended, according to the residents.
This came after the reported seizure of a powerful armed faction commander by a rival force.
“We have heard gunfire for almost two hours now and we do not know what will happen. We fear for our safety,” one of the residents in the Furnaj district noted.
In the same vein, local media and a source in the 444 brigade revealed that Mahmoud Hamza, head of the 444 brigade that controls much of Tripoli, was detained at Mitiga airport by the Special Deterrence Force.
Meanwhile, Libyan medical sources have not reported casualties or injuries as a result of these clashes, while the ambulance and emergency apparatus has mobilized all its units, and called on citizens not to move randomly and to get away from the areas of clashes.
On his part, Khaled Al-Mashri, the head of the High Council of State, called on the parties in the capital to exercise maximum restraint in order to protect the lives of civilians and the capabilities of the Libyan people.
