The Argentinian Football Association has filed a complaint with FIFA following the Olympic football team’s loss to Morocco on the opening day of the Olympic Games football competitions. According to a statement released by the Argentinian newspaper TYC, the local federation protested the outcome of the match against Morocco, which ended in a 2-1 victory for the “Atlas Lions” after a dramatic game that resumed two hours after being halted, and the disallowance of Argentina’s equalizing goal. As a result, “La Albiceleste” lost in the first round of the Group B matches at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Argentinian federation’s president, Chiqui Tapia, stated, “We faced an unfortunate situation in Saint-Étienne, waiting in the changing room for nearly two hours, forcing our players to warm up again and resume the game that was stopped by the referee due to the Moroccan fans’ disturbance.”
He continued, “The Argentinian delegation was subjected to unjustified violence that contradicts the rules of competition.” Tapia further explained that the views of both team captains (Achraf Hakimi and Nicolas Otamendi) were ignored, both of whom agreed that the match should not have resumed. Tapia concluded by noting that the Argentinian federation has lodged a complaint with FIFA’s disciplinary committee to take necessary actions and impose sanctions on those involved in the incidents.
