Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, has expressed deep concern over the potential expansion of the military confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah. He warned that escalating tensions could draw the Middle East into a regional war.
In a statement released on Monday, the Secretary-General reaffirmed full solidarity with Lebanon and condemned Israeli threats against the country. He emphasized that any potential escalation would pose a threat to the security and stability of the entire region.
Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that the Arab League is also calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident in occupied Syrian Majdal Shams, which resulted in Syrian casualties.
Rushdi noted that the Arab League has repeatedly warned, most recently through the personal envoy of the Secretary-General to Lebanon, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, about the negative repercussions of Israel’s ongoing aggressive war on Gaza.
He highlighted the risks of its expansion and the onset of a significant military confrontation and instability.
The Arab League urged an immediate halt to the war, stressing that de-escalation in Lebanon would be crucial. The importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was also underscored.
Additionally, the Secretary-General is set to engage in a series of international communications to help contain the situation and avoid further escalation, which could lead to undesirable instability in the region.
The Israeli occupation continues its aggression on towns and villages in southern Lebanon, coinciding with its relentless assault on the Gaza Strip since October 7. This aggression has resulted in civilian casualties and forced hundreds of families to flee their homes.
