Algerian Senate President, Salah Goudjil, has called on the Algerian people to actively participate in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for September 7.

Speaking in Algiers, Goudjil emphasized the importance of voting freely and democratically.

During the closing session of the 2023/2024 parliamentary term, Goudjil highlighted that Algeria is at a critical juncture, with the presidential election serving as a pivotal opportunity to realize democratic practices.

Algeria has announced that it will hold early presidential elections on 7 September 2024, three months earlier than scheduled.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose current term was set to expire in December, has not indicated whether he will seek re-election, and there has been no immediate explanation provided for the early election.

In a separate context, the Senate drew a parallel between the ongoing Israeli occupation’s attacks on Palestine and the brutal colonial era Algeria endured under French rule.

He stated that Algeria’s historical struggle for freedom and independence serves as a foundation for its support of peoples’ rights to liberty and resistance against land appropriation, as is the case in Palestine.

The country has urged the international community to shoulder its responsibility and provide protection for Palestinian children, particularly in Gaza, from the violence, repression, and terrorism perpetrated by Israeli occupation forces.

The Algerian call emphasizes the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid without conditions or obstacles.

These remarks were delivered by Algerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amar Benjamia, during a session titled “Advancing our Collective Standards in Protecting Children and Ending all Grave Violations.

Benjamia underscored the necessity of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid without conditions or obstacles, noting that over 15,000 children have been killed during the ongoing aggression by the Israeli military on Gaza.
