Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour has secured the first gold medal for both Algeria and the Arab world at the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris, which will continue until August 11.
Nemour clinched the top spot in the women’s uneven bars final with a score of 15.700. Her achievement came just days after she placed in the all-around final.
At just 18 years old, Nemour has etched her name in Olympic history as the first Arab and African gymnast to reach the top of the podium.
This gold medal marks Algeria’s first Olympic gold since the London 2012 Games, where runner Taoufik Makhloufi won the country’s last gold medal.
It is also the second medal for Algeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following boxer Imane Khelif’s assured bronze in the under-66 kg category, with her semi-final match scheduled for next Tuesday.
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, hosted by France, have seen a strong international presence and competitive performances.
Nemour’s victory not only highlights her achievement but also reflects the growing prominence of Arab athletes on the global stage.
Her win represents a significant milestone for Algerian sports and offers a proud moment for the Arab world.
