Algeria renewed its call for the Security Council to adopt an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, stressing its rejection of any plan targeting the forced displacement of Palestinians.
This came in a speech delivered by Algeria’s Assistant Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nassim Gaouaoui, at the Council’s regular session on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.
Gaouaoui said in his speech: “We meet today, and the aggression against the Palestinian people has passed its 140th day. Dar Luqman is still intact.”
“Where images of devastation and destruction remain, spreading throughout the besieged Gaza Strip. Amidst increasing attacks by settlers and occupation forces in the West Bank and Al-Quds Al-Sharif,” the Algerian representative adds.
He continued: “The world, including the Security Council, stands unable to stop a barbaric killing machine that has become accustomed to orgies without accountability or supervision.”
Before he added, “Anyone who believes that he can extinguish the flame of the desire for liberation and emancipation with iron and fire is delusional.”
He added: “And everyone who thinks that building settlements in the West Bank and Holy Jerusalem, planting settlers there, and encroaching on the Palestinians today. “It will kill their hopes of establishing their state, as it is also delusional.”
On Tuesday, the United States blocked a draft resolution submitted by Algeria to the Security Council, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and rejecting any efforts to displace the Palestinians.
Washington rejected the Algerian draft resolution, in exchange for the approval of most members of the Security Council. Except for the United Kingdom, which abstained from voting.
