Algeria has conveyed deep concerns and regret following Mali’s announcement of the termination of the Algiers Agreement, a crucial peace and reconciliation accord. The transitional authority in Mali declared the “immediate suspension” of the 2015 agreement, citing the failure of other signatories to fulfill their commitments and alleging “hostile actions” by Algeria.
In response to this development, Algeria issued a warning, highlighting the potential risks not only for Mali but for the entire region that is actively seeking peace and security. The Algerian Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the decision, expressing apprehension over the possible implications of suspending the agreement.
In an address to the people of Mali, the Ministry reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast support for the accord, underlining its sincerity, good faith, and solidarity. It vehemently rejected the justifications put forth by the Malian authorities for abandoning the agreement, deeming them “untrue and completely irrelevant.”
According to the Ministry, Mali has neglected its responsibility in implementing the agreement over the past two years and consistently rebuffed any attempts to revive it. The situation has raised concerns about the trajectory of peace efforts in the region, and Algeria remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to stability and reconciliation.
