Algeria has called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting to address the ongoing violence in Gaza.
According to Algerian news outlet Ennahar, this meeting is expected to take place on Wednesday as part of Algeria’s diplomatic efforts to end the military actions in Gaza.
This call for action follows a statement by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, during a Security Council meeting last week on the situation in the Middle East.
In his speech, Benjama emphasized the need for the Council to act decisively to maintain its credibility and enforce a ceasefire in Gaza, particularly condemning the use of starvation as a weapon of war by Israel.
“The Security Council resolutions explicitly prohibit the use of starvation as a weapon of war,” said Bendjama. He warned that the international community is witnessing a war crime in Gaza and urged the Council to take firm action to restore peace and protect its standing in the global arena.
The Gaza Strip has been at the center of a long-standing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories. The region, home to over two million Palestinians, has seen frequent outbreaks of violence, particularly between Israeli forces and Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza.
The recent escalation in violence has drawn widespread international condemnation, with many countries calling for an immediate ceasefire to halt civilian casualties and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Israeli military has launched repeated airstrikes on Gaza, targeting what it describes as Hamas infrastructure, while Hamas has fired rockets into Israeli territory.
Civilian infrastructure, including homes, schools, and hospitals, has been severely damaged in Gaza, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. Access to necessities like food, water, and electricity has been severely restricted, leading to growing calls for international intervention.
Algeria, a long-time supporter of the Palestinian cause, has consistently advocated for an end to the occupation and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
The country’s latest diplomatic push at the UN reflects its commitment to seeking a resolution to the conflict and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people.
