Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan headed to Egypt to meet with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to an announcement by Sudan’s Sovereign Council on Tuesday.
The high-level meeting aims to discuss the evolving situation in Sudan, bilateral relations between the two countries, and avenues for enhancing mutual support and collaboration on issues of common interest.
Burhan will be accompanied by Sudan’s acting Foreign Minister Ambassador Ali Al-Sadiq, Director of General Intelligence General First Class Ahmed Ibrahim Mufadhal, and General First Class Mirghani Idris Suleiman, Director-General of the Defense Industries System.
This visit marks the first time Burhan has left Sudan since the onset of conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15.
On Monday, the Sudan’s army chief he was in the Red Sea city of Port Sudan where he made a fiery address to troops, vowing to fight the RSF whom he branded mercenaries to “end the rebellion”.
“We are mobilizing everywhere to defeat this rebellion, defeat this treason, by these mercenaries who come from all over the world,” Burhan told cheering troops. “There is no time for discussion now. We are concentrating all our efforts on the war, to put an end to the rebellion.”
The country has been witnessing large-scale, violent clashes between the Sudanese Army and Rapid Support Forces for over four months, primarily concentrated in the capital, Khartoum. These confrontations have resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries.
Arab, African, and international mediators have attempted to broker a ceasefire, but these efforts have so far been unsuccessful in bringing about a permanent end to the fighting.
