A shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa left 41 people dead, Italian media reported on Wednesday.

Italian news agency ANSA cited survivors who revealed that the vessel had set sail from the Tunisian city of Sfax to Italy.

Officials also indicated that four survivors were rescued by a Maltese cargo ship and taken to Lampedusa by the Italian coastguard and were reportedly in a state of shock.

The vessel had traveled for around six hours before it was capsized by a large wave.

Last month, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the allocation of €16 million to Libya and Niger as part of initiatives aimed at combating human trafficking and handling migration flows.

The High Council of State believed that developing illegal immigrant countries is the “radical solution” to the problem, and other than that are “inhumane, temporary fabricated solutions.”

According to a statement issued by the Italian Ministry, the financial support was distributed at the rate of €8.5 million for three projects in Libya and €7.5 million for three projects in Niger.
