The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, Abdullah Patel, renewed on Sunday the UN mission’s commitment to enhancing lasting peace and stability in Libya and paving the way for comprehensive and transparent elections.

Patel made these comments in a tweet he published on his Twitter account following his meeting on Sunday with the head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed al-Manfi, according to the Libyan news agency.

In his tweet, Patel said, “I was received today by the President of the Presidential Council, Mr. Mohammed al-Manfi. We had a fruitful discussion about the latest political developments in the country. We renewed our joint commitment to enhancing lasting peace and stability in Libya and paving the way for comprehensive and transparent elections”.

Earlier on Sunday, al-Manfi and Patel discussed the UN mission’s efforts to communicate with all Libyan parties to conduct parliamentary and presidential elections.

The media office of the President of the Presidential Council mentioned that Patel updated al-Manfi on the mission’s efforts to facilitate a consensus among all Libyan factions to conduct the parliamentary and presidential elections based on the outcomes of the 6+6 dialogue, as well as the results of the 5+5 military committee meeting that was hosted in Benghazi last week with the participation of representatives from the security track of the Berlin Conference.

According to the media office, the UN envoy praised al-Manfi’s speech at the Russia-Africa Summit, in which he addressed the key national issues that achieve stability in Libya and respond to the aspirations of the Libyan people for comprehensive national reconciliation, general elections, sustainable development, preservation of national unity, and guarantee of the independence of national will and decision.
