G20 Leaders Fail to Agree on Fossil Fuel Reductions

The G20 major economies, including the European Union and South Africa, were unable to reach a consensus on phasing down fossil fuels during their meeting in India.

Despite mounting concerns over the climate crisis and extreme weather events worldwide, disagreements among some producer nations hindered progress on curbing fossil fuel use.

The intended tripling of renewable energy capacities by 2030 and financial support for climate action in developing economies also faced opposition.

Discussions centered on curbing “unabated” fossil fuel use, but no agreement was reached on this crucial issue.

The failure to issue a joint communique further highlights the challenges in addressing global warming and emphasizes the urgency for meaningful action on climate change.
