On Saturday afternoon, the Palestinian telecommunications company “Paltel” announced a complete shutdown of internet services in northern Gaza due to relentless Israeli airstrikes.
This significant disruption has left residents isolated from vital communication and information channels.
According to reports from the Palestinian news agency, the outage affected most areas in northern Gaza, following previous intermittent disruptions that culminated in a total blackout.
The company indicated that the continued bombardment had severely impacted the region’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, as part of Israel’s military operations against Hamas, internet and telecommunications services have experienced repeated interruptions throughout Gaza.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified their air campaign in response to Hamas’s attacks, which have included rocket fire targeting Israeli cities.
These military actions have caused extensive damage to the already fragile infrastructure in Gaza, resulting in sporadic service outages that have become increasingly common as the conflict escalates.
The complete internet shutdown is particularly concerning given the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. As hospitals struggle to cope with an influx of casualties and basic services dwindle, the lack of communication further complicates efforts to coordinate aid and support for the affected population.
The UN and various humanitarian organizations have repeatedly called for increased access to medical assistance and essential supplies.
This disruption of internet services underscores the broader implications of the ongoing conflict, which not only affects military operations but also has a profound impact on civilian life, hindering communication and access to information during a time of crisis.
